The Best Ecommerce Email Marketing Software in 2026

For most established ecommerce brands, Klaviyo is still the ecommerce email marketing software we would choose.

It has the deepest customer-data model, the strongest lifecycle automation and the broadest ecommerce integration ecosystem.

But best is not a single answer.

The right platform depends on list size, sending volume, lifecycle complexity, SMS priorities and how much of the software your team will actually use.

So this is not a ranked list of 20 tools.

It is a shortlist of platforms worth considering, and the reason each one earns a place.

Choose the Platform After the Strategy, Not Before

Most software comparisons start in the wrong place.

They ask:

Which tool has the most features?

The better sequence is:

  1. What customer behavior are we trying to change?
  2. Which lifecycle moments matter most?
  3. What data do we need to act on that?
  4. Which channels are genuinely part of the plan?
  5. What will the team realistically operate every week?
  6. Then: which platform fits?

The channel is not the strategy, and neither is the software. Our operating model is described in the ecommerce email and SMS marketing system.

1. Klaviyo: Our Default for Sophisticated Brands

Klaviyo's advantage is not the email editor. It is the data underneath.

You can build retention around:

  • products viewed and purchased
  • purchase frequency and order value
  • customer lifecycle stage
  • engagement
  • subscription state
  • custom events and external app data

It also advertises more than 350 pre-built integrations.

The tradeoff is cost at scale and the fact that many brands pay for depth they never use.

Our full assessment is in the Klaviyo review, and the pricing model is broken down in Klaviyo Pricing Explained.

2. Omnisend: The Closest Ecommerce Alternative

Omnisend covers most of the core ecommerce jobs brands use Klaviyo for, generally at lower cost.

It supports campaigns, automations, segmentation, forms, email, SMS, testing and ecommerce reporting.

We prefer its A/B testing workflow, and it surfaces some useful account information faster than Klaviyo does.

We still prefer Klaviyo for overall depth and for complex customer-data requirements. The side-by-side is in Omnisend vs Klaviyo.

3. Sendlane: When the Database Is the Cost Problem

Sendlane's positioning is: pay for sends, not profiles.

It advertises unlimited profiles and prices around normal sending volume, which can help brands carrying a large historical customer database and a much smaller active audience.

This does not automatically make it cheaper. High-volume senders need to model the economics carefully.

4. Attentive: When SMS Is the Center of the Program

Attentive built its reputation on SMS and has expanded into a broader omnichannel platform including SMS, email, RCS, push, identity and cross-channel journeys.

It currently advertises more than 100 integrations.

Pricing is sales-led rather than published self-serve, so do not assume it is cheaper without a quote.

5. Drip: Ecommerce Email Automation

Drip remains focused on B2C and ecommerce email, with behavior-based workflows, segmentation, onsite forms and reporting.

It advertises more than 200 ecommerce integrations, including Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce, and offers free migration and onboarding above 17,500 contacts.

We do not manage Drip day to day, so treat this as a product-fit assessment rather than first-hand operating experience.

6. Mailchimp: Broader General Marketing

Mailchimp is more ecommerce-capable than its old newsletter reputation suggests, with a direct Shopify integration, ecommerce automations, product recommendations, segmentation and SMS.

It advertises more than 300 integrations.

For a sophisticated DTC retention program we would still prefer Klaviyo, as we explain in Klaviyo vs Mailchimp and Omnisend vs Mailchimp.

7. Shopify Messaging: The Honest Option for Simple Stores

Shopify Messaging now supports email, SMS, WhatsApp, automations and campaigns directly from the Shopify admin.

Its email pricing is very straightforward:

  • first 10,000 email sends per month are free
  • additional email pricing starts at $1 per 1,000 sends
  • volume pricing decreases at higher thresholds

For a sophisticated retention operation we would want something more specialized. For a merchant who needs straightforward campaigns and basic automations, this can be the rational answer.

How the Pricing Models Actually Differ

Klaviyo
Primarily active profiles and sending allowance.
Omnisend
Billable contacts, with send limits depending on plan.
Sendlane
Sending volume, with unlimited profiles.
Mailchimp
Contact tier plus plan, with monthly send limits tied to both.
Shopify Messaging
Email sends, with a free monthly allowance.
Attentive
Custom, sales-led pricing based on subscriber base and messaging.

A platform with the lowest headline price can become the most expensive at your real scale. Model the actual account before deciding.

What Actually Determines Results

Software is a smaller variable than most brands expect.

What moves customer economics is:

  • which lifecycle moments you cover
  • how well you segment around real behavior
  • offer and message quality
  • sending discipline and list health
  • testing cadence
  • which metrics you hold yourself to

That is also why we do not judge a program on attributed revenue alone. The measures we watch are in ecommerce retention metrics, and list health discipline in Klaviyo email deliverability.

Our Verdict

Klaviyo remains our default for established ecommerce brands with sophisticated retention requirements.

Omnisend is the closest ecommerce alternative for brands that do not need that ceiling. The rest of this shortlist earns consideration for specific reasons rather than general superiority.

The question is not which platform is best in the abstract.

It is which platform lets your team operate the retention strategy you actually have.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best email marketing software for ecommerce?

For established brands with sophisticated retention requirements, we would choose Klaviyo. For brands that do not need that depth, Omnisend is the closest ecommerce alternative.

What is the best email platform for Shopify?

Klaviyo and Omnisend are both strong Shopify options. Shopify Messaging can be enough for simple campaigns and basic automations.

What is the cheapest ecommerce email platform?

It depends on contact count and sending volume, because platforms bill differently. Shopify Messaging, Omnisend and Sendlane can all produce lower costs than Klaviyo in specific scenarios.

Do I need SMS in my email platform?

Only if SMS is genuinely part of your retention plan. If it is, compare supported countries, consent tooling, message costs and how well SMS coordinates with email.

Does the platform determine email marketing results?

No. Lifecycle coverage, segmentation, offer quality, sending discipline and testing cadence matter far more than the software brand.

When should I switch platforms?

When a specific, named problem cannot be solved on your current platform. Migration costs time and risk, so it should buy something meaningful.
