Klaviyo vs Mailchimp: Which Is Better for Ecommerce in 2026?

For an established ecommerce brand, we would choose Klaviyo over Mailchimp.

Mailchimp is a capable marketing platform. It integrates directly with Shopify, supports ecommerce automations, segmentation, email, SMS and hundreds of integrations.

But Klaviyo is built around ecommerce customer data at a deeper level. That becomes increasingly important as your retention program moves beyond newsletters and a few basic automations.

Our simple answer is:

Choose Klaviyo when customer behavior, lifecycle automation and ecommerce data are central to your retention strategy.

Choose Mailchimp when you need a broader general marketing platform and your ecommerce lifecycle requirements are relatively straightforward.

Both platforms have become much broader than they were a few years ago.

Mailchimp now integrates directly with Shopify and can sync customer, order and behavioral data for campaigns, automations, product recommendations and segmentation. It also advertises more than 300 integrations.

Klaviyo advertises more than 350 pre-built integrations and has expanded from an email platform into a wider B2C CRM covering marketing, customer data, analytics and service.

So this is no longer:

One platform does ecommerce and the other doesn't.

The more useful question is:

How much ecommerce-specific depth does your retention team actually need?

Why We Prefer Klaviyo for Sophisticated Ecommerce Brands

Klaviyo is still our default platform for established ecommerce brands. There is a reason it became the market leader.

Its biggest strength is not the email editor. It is the data underneath the email.

A retention team can use customer behavior such as:

  • products viewed
  • products purchased
  • purchase frequency
  • order value
  • engagement
  • predicted customer behavior
  • subscription events
  • browsing behavior
  • custom profile properties
  • external app data

to change who receives a message and what happens next.

That makes Klaviyo increasingly valuable as the retention system becomes more sophisticated. Our full assessment of the platform sits in our Klaviyo review.

Mailchimp Is More Ecommerce-Capable Than Its Old Reputation Suggests

It would be unfair to describe Mailchimp as a newsletter tool that cannot handle ecommerce. That is outdated.

Its Shopify integration can sync:

  • customer information
  • order information
  • behavioral data
  • product activity
  • customer segments

Mailchimp can also use that data for ecommerce automations including:

  • welcome sequences
  • abandoned carts
  • back-in-stock messages
  • product recommendations
  • promotional campaigns

It also supports email and SMS depending on plan and region.

So a brand can absolutely run a functioning ecommerce email program in Mailchimp. The difference is what happens when the lifecycle becomes more complicated.

Where Klaviyo Pulls Ahead: Customer Data

This is the biggest difference for us.

Klaviyo treats the customer profile as the center of the system. That makes it particularly useful when you want to ask questions like:

  • Who bought product A but never product B?
  • Which first-time buyers are approaching their normal second-purchase window?
  • Who viewed a product repeatedly but never purchased?
  • Which VIP customers are starting to lapse?
  • Which subscribers are active in one channel but not another?
  • Which customers have a specific subscription state?

You can build increasingly granular dynamic audiences around behavior and properties.

Mailchimp also supports segmentation. But for sophisticated ecommerce lifecycle work, we would rather have Klaviyo's depth.

Where Klaviyo Pulls Ahead: Lifecycle Automation

Simple automation is not difficult on either platform.

The gap becomes more important when the flow logic starts to look like:

Trigger, customer state, purchase history, product condition, channel condition, time delay, behavioral split, then another customer-state check.

Klaviyo's flow system is one of the reasons we continue to prefer the platform. It gives retention teams room to build around what customers actually do.

That matters much more than having 50 pre-built templates.

When Mailchimp Is Enough

Not every ecommerce brand needs that much depth.

Mailchimp can make sense when:

  • campaigns are the main email activity
  • flows are relatively simple
  • segmentation requirements are basic
  • the business uses Mailchimp for other marketing functions
  • the existing team already knows the platform
  • switching would add more operational cost than business value
  • advanced customer-state logic is not important

A platform does not become better because it gives you functionality you never use.

If Mailchimp already does everything your team needs, migration for the sake of migration is pointless.

Pricing: Do Not Compare Only the Starting Number

As of September 2026, both platforms offer a free tier around the first 250 contacts or active profiles.

Mailchimp currently offers:

  • Free
  • Essentials
  • Standard
  • Premium

Its current public starting prices are approximately:

  • Essentials from $13 per month
  • Standard from $20 per month
  • Premium from $350 per month

Mailchimp also applies monthly send limits based on the contact tier and plan. At the time this article was written:

  • Essentials supports roughly 10 times the contact limit in monthly email sends
  • Standard roughly 12 times
  • Premium roughly 15 times

Klaviyo's email pricing primarily scales with active profiles and sending allowance.

The more useful comparison is therefore not:

Which starts cheaper?

It is:

What does the software cost at your actual list size and actual sending volume?

Then ask whether you are using the capabilities the premium pays for. We break the profile-based model down in Klaviyo Pricing Explained.

Integrations: Both Are Broad

Mailchimp advertises more than 300 integrations.

Klaviyo advertises more than 350 pre-built integrations.

For a straightforward Shopify brand, the raw integration count probably will not decide anything.

Instead, audit the specific stack:

  • ecommerce platform
  • subscriptions
  • loyalty
  • reviews
  • customer support
  • attribution
  • analytics
  • returns
  • shipping
  • onsite personalization

A list of 350 integrations means nothing if the one app critical to your business is missing.

Reporting

Mailchimp has campaign reporting, custom reporting on higher plans, ecommerce performance data and Shopify-connected attribution.

Klaviyo goes deeper into the retention and customer-data layer.

That does not mean every Klaviyo report is automatically easier to use.

We have said the same thing when comparing Omnisend with Klaviyo: depth and accessibility are different things.

Klaviyo's advantage is how much underlying customer data and lifecycle information you can work with.

What About SMS?

Both platforms support SMS.

But SMS should not determine the decision unless it is a meaningful part of your retention program.

Our own SMS philosophy is deliberately selective. We prefer SMS for genuinely time-sensitive moments rather than mirroring every email campaign, which is the approach behind our SMS marketing best practices.

If SMS is a major strategic channel, compare:

  • supported countries
  • consent tooling
  • sending costs
  • automation
  • segmentation
  • deliverability support
  • cross-channel coordination

Should You Switch From Mailchimp to Klaviyo?

Consider it when:

  • your ecommerce data needs have become more complex
  • lifecycle automation is becoming difficult to execute
  • customer-state segmentation matters more
  • the retention team needs deeper behavioral data
  • your current reporting does not answer the questions you need
  • Mailchimp is becoming the limiting factor

Do not migrate because:

Everyone serious uses Klaviyo.

There should be a real business problem behind the decision.

Klaviyo provides a specific Mailchimp migration workflow that can sync subscribers, unsubscribes, audiences and recent campaign activity.

But migration still means:

  • rebuilding flows
  • checking consent
  • testing integrations
  • rebuilding forms
  • verifying tracking
  • warming into a new operational setup

That effort should buy you something meaningful.

Should You Switch From Klaviyo to Mailchimp?

For sophisticated ecommerce brands, this is less commonly the direction we would recommend.

But it can make sense if:

  • the brand does not use Klaviyo's ecommerce depth
  • the retention strategy is relatively simple
  • broader general marketing functionality matters more
  • operating complexity needs to decrease
  • the economics materially improve

Again: name the problem before changing the platform. If the honest answer is cost, start with our shortlist of Klaviyo alternatives instead of defaulting to a general marketing tool.

Our Verdict

Mailchimp is much more capable for ecommerce than the old newsletter platform stereotype suggests.

But for established ecommerce brands that want retention marketing built around customer behavior, Klaviyo remains our choice.

Its customer-data model, segmentation and lifecycle infrastructure give sophisticated retention teams more room.

Mailchimp can be completely adequate when the program is simpler.

The deciding question is not:

Can Mailchimp send abandoned-cart emails?

Of course it can.

The deciding question is:

How much customer and lifecycle complexity does your business need to operationalize?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Klaviyo better than Mailchimp for ecommerce?

For sophisticated ecommerce brands, we believe so. Klaviyo provides deeper ecommerce customer data, behavioral segmentation and lifecycle automation. Mailchimp remains capable for simpler ecommerce programs.

Can Mailchimp be used for Shopify?

Yes. Mailchimp has a direct Shopify integration that syncs customer, order and behavioral data and supports ecommerce campaigns and automations.

Is Klaviyo more expensive than Mailchimp?

It depends on list size, sending volume and Mailchimp plan. Both platforms scale pricing with audience size in different ways. Compare the actual tier your store needs rather than the headline starting price.

Does Mailchimp have abandoned-cart automation?

Yes. Mailchimp supports ecommerce automations including abandoned cart and other Shopify-connected lifecycle messages.

Is Mailchimp easier than Klaviyo?

Mailchimp can feel more straightforward for a basic email program. Klaviyo gives you more depth, which can also introduce more complexity.

When should a brand move from Mailchimp to Klaviyo?

Move when your lifecycle, segmentation, customer-data or integration requirements have outgrown the current setup. Do not migrate purely because Klaviyo is more popular in ecommerce.
