Klaviyo vs ActiveCampaign: Which Is Better for Ecommerce in 2026?

Quick answer: For an ecommerce brand, we would choose Klaviyo over ActiveCampaign. Klaviyo is built around store data (what people viewed, carted, bought and when they will probably buy again), and that is what drives repeat purchases. ActiveCampaign is a strong marketing automation and CRM tool, and it is the better pick if you sell B2B, run a service business or need a sales pipeline next to your email.

What Each Platform Is Actually Built For

This is the whole decision, so it is worth saying plainly.

Klaviyo started in ecommerce and still thinks like an ecommerce tool. The customer profile sits in the middle, and everything a shopper does in your store lands on it as an event.

ActiveCampaign thinks like a marketing and sales team. Contacts, tags, deals, lead scores and automations that move a lead from "interested" to "booked a call". It connects to Shopify, WooCommerce and others, but the ecommerce part is one module in a much wider toolbox.

Neither is wrong. They are aimed at different problems. A store whose revenue comes from the same customers buying again and again has a different problem from a company whose revenue comes from a sales conversation.

Where Klaviyo Wins for Ecommerce

The data underneath the email

Once Klaviyo's Shopify integration is set up and the historical sync finishes, new orders, customers and catalog changes sync in real time. With onsite tracking turned on, you also get Viewed Product, Added to Cart, Checkout Started and Placed Order as events on each profile.

That is not a nice-to-have. It is what lets you build things like a browse abandonment flow off Viewed Product, a cart flow off Checkout Started, and a post-purchase flow that depends on which product someone actually bought. We walk through the cart version in our guide to the Klaviyo abandoned cart flow.

Predictive fields you can build on

Klaviyo calculates predicted customer lifetime value, churn risk and expected date of next order on each profile. The one we lean on most is expected date of next order. A flow that fires a few days before someone's usual reorder window beats a generic "we miss you" email almost every time.

There is a catch, and Klaviyo is upfront about it. The predictions only show up once your account has at least 500 customers who have ordered, at least 180 days of order history, orders in the last 30 days, and some customers with three or more orders. A brand-new store will not see them. An established one will. We cover how to use them without over-trusting them in our guide to Klaviyo predictive analytics.

Segments built on behavior, not just tags

Because the order and event data is already there, segmenting is mostly a matter of asking the question. First-time buyers who are close to their second-purchase window. VIPs who have gone quiet. People who viewed the same product three times and never bought. In ActiveCampaign you can build a lot of this too, but you will lean more on tags and custom fields that you or an automation has to maintain.

Back in stock, built in

Klaviyo has a Back in Stock feature with its own flow trigger and signup form. For brands that sell out of products, that is real revenue sitting in a flow. We could not confirm an equivalent native feature on ActiveCampaign's pricing page, so if this matters to you, ask them directly.

Where ActiveCampaign Wins

We would not tell a coach, a SaaS company or a B2B brand to switch to Klaviyo. ActiveCampaign is stronger in a few places that matter for them.

  • CRM and pipelines. ActiveCampaign has deal records, pipelines and lead scoring (through its Enhanced CRM add-ons). If a human sales team follows up with leads, this is a real advantage.
  • Lead nurturing. Landing pages, site messages and multi-step automations that move a lead along are a core use case, not an afterthought.
  • Integrations. ActiveCampaign lists 1000+ integrations on its pricing page, including Salesforce on Enterprise. If your stack is full of non-ecommerce tools, that helps.
  • Hybrid businesses. A brand that sells products online and also runs consultations, wholesale deals or B2B quotes may genuinely need both sides.

So the honest rule is this: if your revenue starts with a sales conversation, look at ActiveCampaign first. If your revenue starts with a checkout, look at Klaviyo first.

Can ActiveCampaign Run an Ecommerce Store's Email?

Yes. We want to be clear about that, because the lazy version of this comparison pretends otherwise.

ActiveCampaign's Shopify integration syncs orders, products, customers and abandoned carts, for logged-in customers and guests. It has an "Abandons Cart" trigger that you can narrow by store, product, product category or cart value, an Abandoned Cart content block for the email, and a Products block that pulls up to four products from a Shopify collection, sorted by best selling, recently added or price.

Two things to know before you commit:

  1. The good ecommerce features are gated by plan. On Starter you get the Shopify integration and abandoned cart, but you are limited to 5 actions per automation, and the product catalog, coupons and ecommerce reporting start on Plus. Revenue attribution, conversion tracking, conditional content and the Shopify Plus integration start on Pro.
  2. Shopify abandoned cart data syncs once the shopper reaches the shipping information step at checkout. ActiveCampaign says so in its own help center. Know that before you compare recovery numbers between tools.

Pricing: Compare What They Count, Not the Starting Price

Both platforms scale with the size of your list. The interesting part is what each one counts.

Klaviyo bills on active profiles. Suppressed and unsubscribed profiles do not count toward your billing total, which is why list cleaning can lower the bill. There is a free plan up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends per month, and SMS is priced separately per message. Our breakdown is in Klaviyo pricing explained.

ActiveCampaign has four plans (Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise) priced by contact count, and email sends are capped at a multiple of your contact limit: 10x on Starter and Plus, 12x on Pro and 15x on Enterprise. For accounts created on or after November 3, 2025, every contact counts toward your limit, including unsubscribed and bounced ones. Older accounts only count active contacts. SMS is a paid add-on, and it needs the Plus plan or higher.

We are deliberately not putting dollar figures in this table. Both pricing pages load their numbers dynamically, they change, and the number that matters is the one for your list size and the plan that has the features you need. For an ecommerce brand that usually means ActiveCampaign Plus or Pro, not Starter. Get both quotes at your real list size and compare those.

SMS and WhatsApp

Klaviyo includes SMS in the same platform and the same flows as email, and the free plan comes with a small monthly mobile messaging allowance. Cost depends on country, message type and volume.

ActiveCampaign sells SMS as an add-on (Plus plan and up) and WhatsApp as separate plans that you can combine with an email plan. It works, but it is more of an assembly job. If SMS is a serious channel for you, price both setups with your real send volume. We keep SMS selective on our side, as we explain in our SMS marketing strategy guide.

Should You Switch From ActiveCampaign to Klaviyo?

Consider it when:

  • most of your revenue comes from your online store, not sales calls
  • you are patching ecommerce gaps with tags, custom fields and workarounds
  • you want predicted CLV, churn risk and expected next order date in your segments
  • you are on ActiveCampaign Starter and hitting its limits, and the upgrade to Plus or Pro changes the math
  • you want SMS and email to run off the same profile

Do not switch just because everyone in ecommerce uses Klaviyo. Switching means rebuilding your flows, forms and segments, checking consent, testing every integration and verifying tracking. That is real work. It should buy you something specific.

If you do move, plan it as a rebuild, not a copy and paste. Your old automations were built around ActiveCampaign's logic, and the best Klaviyo version of a flow usually looks different.

Which One Should You Pick?

Pick Klaviyo if:

  • you run an established ecommerce store, especially on Shopify
  • repeat purchases are central to your growth
  • you want flows and segments driven by what shoppers actually do
  • SMS is part of the plan

Pick ActiveCampaign if:

  • you sell B2B or services, or run a hybrid business
  • your team needs a CRM and a sales pipeline in the same tool
  • your email is mostly lead nurturing
  • your ecommerce needs are simple and the sales side is the main event

Our Verdict

For ecommerce brands, we choose Klaviyo. We have run email and SMS for ecommerce brands that have generated more than $300M in client revenue, and the work that moves repeat purchase rate almost always depends on store data and customer behavior being easy to use. Klaviyo gives you that without workarounds.

ActiveCampaign is a good platform that is simply pointed at a different target. If you sell through sales conversations, it may be the right call, and we would say so.

If you are unsure which side of that line you are on, ask one question: does a customer's next purchase come from a conversation with your team, or from the right message at the right time? If it is the second one, use Klaviyo. And if you want help deciding or setting it up, our Klaviyo management service exists for exactly that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Klaviyo better than ActiveCampaign for ecommerce?

For most established ecommerce brands, yes. Klaviyo is built around store data, with real-time Shopify syncing, onsite events and predictive fields like expected date of next order. ActiveCampaign can run ecommerce email, but it is designed more for marketing automation and CRM.

Is ActiveCampaign good for Shopify stores?

It can work. ActiveCampaign has a Shopify integration that syncs orders, products, customers and abandoned carts, plus an abandoned cart trigger and product blocks. Many of the ecommerce features sit on higher plans, and Shopify Plus needs the Pro or Enterprise plan.

Which is cheaper, Klaviyo or ActiveCampaign?

It depends on your list size and the plan you need. Klaviyo bills on active profiles and excludes suppressed ones, while newer ActiveCampaign accounts count every contact, including unsubscribed and bounced. Get quotes from both at your real list size and compare plans with the same features.

Does ActiveCampaign have SMS?

Yes, as a paid add-on that requires the Plus plan or higher. WhatsApp is sold separately as its own plans. Klaviyo includes SMS inside the same platform, with pricing based on country, message type and volume.

When should I choose ActiveCampaign over Klaviyo?

Choose ActiveCampaign if you sell B2B or services, need CRM features like deals and lead scoring, or your email is mainly about nurturing leads toward a sales conversation. If your revenue comes from online checkouts and repeat orders, Klaviyo is the better fit.

Can I switch from ActiveCampaign to Klaviyo?

Yes. Plan it as a rebuild rather than a copy. You will need to recreate flows, signup forms and segments, confirm consent, test integrations and check tracking before you switch sending over.
