How to Build High-Converting Shopify Popups With Alia
A signup form should do more than collect email addresses.
Its job is to capture enough visitor intent to continue the customer journey after someone leaves the site. Alia is one of the signup-form platforms Magicianly uses for Shopify brands because it supports multi-step experiences, quizzes, zero-party data and built-in testing.
Disclosure: Magicianly may receive a commission if you sign up for Alia through one of our referral links. We recommend it because we use and test it in ecommerce accounts.
On form conversion rate: some implementations can reach double-digit rates, but results vary widely by offer, traffic source, targeting and brand. Treat any published number as a benchmark for the account that produced it, not a target you should expect.
Why Multi-Step Signup Forms Can Work
Multi-step forms work on micro-commitment: an easy first action makes the harder ask feel smaller.
Instead of opening with a request for an email address, the first step asks something low-friction and often interesting, such as a preference or a use case. Once a visitor has engaged with that, giving an email address feels like continuing rather than starting.
A typical progression:
- an easy question or interactive element;
- the email capture;
- optionally, the phone number for SMS where consent requirements are met.
Multi-step is not automatically better. Adding steps adds drop-off points, so test it against a simpler form rather than assuming.
Mini Quizzes and Zero-Party Data
A mini quiz turns the first step into useful data instead of a throwaway click.
The question should be something you would genuinely act on. A shopping goal, a preference, a use case or who they are buying for all work well.
Those answers can then inform:
- which welcome emails a subscriber receives;
- segmentation for future campaigns;
- product recommendations;
- campaign content and angles;
- ongoing customer research about why people arrive.
Zero-party data only pays off if something downstream uses it, which usually means designing the form and the welcome flow together.
Other Interactive Formats
Interactive formats can lift submit rates by making the exchange feel like a moment rather than a tax.
- scratch-off reveals;
- spin-to-win mechanics;
- staged offer reveals.
No single format always wins. Gamified formats can also attract deal-seeking subscribers who convert once and never return, which is why quality matters more than submit rate.
Offers Matter More Than Pretty Design
The offer is usually the highest-leverage variable in the entire form.
Worth testing:
- a mystery discount;
- a percentage off;
- a fixed amount off;
- free shipping;
- a gift with purchase;
- early access;
- a bundle or subscription benefit.
Judge the winner on subscriber-to-customer conversion and the value of the customers it produces, not on form conversion alone. An aggressive discount usually wins on submit rate and frequently loses on margin.
Targeting and Triggers
Targeting decides who sees the form, and it often matters as much as what the form says.
- time delay before display;
- scroll depth;
- exit intent, where supported;
- specific pages or collections;
- device type;
- geography, including consent requirements by region;
- excluding cart and checkout pages where an interruption costs you an order;
- suppressing the form for existing subscribers.
That last point is often overlooked. Showing a first-order offer to a repeat customer is both a poor experience and an unnecessary margin giveaway.
Mobile vs Desktop
Test mobile and desktop separately where traffic volume and user experience justify it.
Mobile behavior is different: screen space is limited, keyboards get in the way, and a form that reads well on desktop can dominate a phone screen. If most of your traffic is mobile, design for mobile first.
That said, do not overcomplicate operations. If one well-built responsive experience performs across both, maintaining two variants adds work without adding revenue.
Integrations
Alia connects to the major ecommerce email platforms, including Klaviyo and Omnisend, alongside other supported destinations.
Integration coverage changes over time, so verify current support for your specific stack rather than relying on any published list. What matters operationally is that consent status, source and quiz answers all arrive on the profile in a usable form.
A/B Testing
Test the high-leverage variables first, in roughly this order.
- the offer;
- the first step;
- the trigger;
- the headline;
- the number of steps;
- the mobile experience.
Keep the success metric downstream. Qualified subscribers, first-purchase rate and the revenue those subscribers eventually produce matter more than submit rate, and the two frequently move in opposite directions.
