Email Subject Line Best Practices for Ecommerce in 2026
A strong subject line can improve an email.
But if your open rates have been falling for months, your subject line is probably not the entire problem.
A brand can test:
- emojis
- curiosity
- capitalization
- personalization
- send time
forever.
If subscribers have learned:
Every email from this brand is another generic promotion.
the sender name itself becomes easy to ignore.
So our first subject-line principle is:
The best subject line cannot compensate for an email program people stopped caring about.
By Emiel Dingemans, Founder of Magicianly
1. Make the Subject Match the Email
If the subject promises:
Something big is coming
and the email is:
10% off socks
you created a disappointing experience.
Curiosity is useful. Bait-and-switch is not.
The subject should create interest in the actual message.
2. Clarity Usually Beats Cleverness
Examples:
- Weak
- You won't BELIEVE this
- Better
- Our most requested color is back
- Weak
- BIG NEWS!!!
- Better
- The new collection just dropped
A subject line does not need to win a creative-writing award.
It needs to earn the open from the right person.
3. Use Specificity
Compare:
New product available
with:
The jacket that sold out in 2 days is back
The second gives the reader more context.
Specificity creates a reason to care.
4. Use Curiosity Without Hiding Everything
Good curiosity creates an information gap.
Example:
The mistake most runners make before mile 10
The reader understands the topic.
They simply do not know the answer yet.
Bad curiosity provides no context:
You need to see this
That can work occasionally.
But as a permanent strategy, it becomes noise.
5. Product Subjects Should Often Name the Product or Benefit
If people already care about the product, use that demand.
Example:
Cloud Jacket is back in black
Do not bury the product behind vague brand language.
6. Sale Subjects Should Make the Offer Understandable
Examples:
- 25% off ends tonight
- Black Friday starts now
- VIP sale access is open
If the point is the promotion, make the promotion clear.
Do not make customers decode the offer.
7. Do Not Train the List With Fake Urgency
If every subject says:
- last chance
- ending tonight
- final hours
- do not miss this
eventually none of them feel urgent.
Urgency works best when the deadline exists independently of the copy. Our ecommerce email marketing calendar is where those real deadlines should come from.
8. Personalization Is Not Automatically Personal
Adding:
Emiel, here's 20% off
does not make a generic email personal.
Useful personalization can reflect:
- customer state
- product interest
- purchase history
- lifecycle stage
That matters much more than inserting a first name.
9. Emojis Are a Tool
Emoji use depends on:
- brand
- audience
- campaign
- inbox context
A single relevant emoji can create visual contrast.
Five can make the email look like spam.
Test it. Do not turn emojis into policy.
10. Keep It Readable on Mobile
Long subject lines can truncate.
That does not mean every subject must be five words.
But the important information should appear early.
Instead of:
Something you've been asking us about for a very long time is finally back
prefer:
It's back: our most requested color
11. The Sender Name Matters Too
Subscribers do not only see the subject.
They see:
- sender
- subject
- preview text
That entire inbox package affects the decision to open.
For founder-style emails, sending from a real human name can sometimes create a different feel from sending only from the brand.
Use this intentionally.
12. Use Preview Text to Add, Not Repeat
Bad:
- Subject
- 25% off starts now
- Preview
- 25% off starts now
Better:
- Subject
- 25% off starts now
- Preview
- Plus first access to our two new releases.
Use the second line to increase information density.
13. Test Meaningful Subject-Line Angles
A/B testing:
20% Off Today
vs
20% Off Today!
may tell you something.
But we would rather test bigger angle differences.
Example:
- Variant A: Offer Led
- 25% off ends tonight
- Variant B: Product Led
- Your best seller is finally on sale
Now you are testing what motivates the open.
14. Do Not Judge the Winner on Opens Alone
If subject A gets more opens but fewer:
- clicks
- purchases
- revenue per recipient
did it actually win?
Maybe not.
The subject line is part of the conversion path.
Not the end result.
15. Open Rates Can Be a Deliverability Problem
When open rates collapse, do not automatically blame creative.
Investigate:
- engagement segmentation
- sender reputation
- deliverability
- list quality
- forgotten flows
- spam complaints
- sending frequency
Subject-line optimization cannot fix inbox placement. Start with Klaviyo email deliverability and how email fatigue and frequency affect engagement instead.
16. Content Quality Affects Future Subject-Line Performance
This is important.
Imagine the subject line is excellent.
The customer opens.
The email is boring, or the design and structure make it hard to read.
You got the open today.
But you may have reduced the likelihood they open next time.
Every email teaches subscribers whether future emails from your brand are worth attention.

Our Subject-Line Checklist
Before sending:
- Is it accurate?
- Is the reason to open clear?
- Does it match the email?
- Is important information early?
- Is urgency real?
- Is curiosity specific?
- Does preview text add something?
- Are we testing a meaningful angle?
- Are we judging performance beyond open rate?
Our Verdict
Subject lines matter.
But brands often overestimate how much they matter.
If open rates are weak because the audience is disengaged or your emails are repetitive:
changing "20% off" to "You won't believe this" is not a strategy.
Fix the reason people stopped caring.
Then make the subject line earn the next open.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a good ecommerce email subject line?
A good subject line is relevant, clear, accurate and creates a reason to open without misleading the subscriber.
How long should an email subject line be?
There is no perfect character count. Put the most important information early so the idea remains clear when mobile inboxes truncate the subject.
Do emojis improve email subject lines?
Sometimes. They can create visual contrast, but the effect depends on audience and context. Test them rather than assuming they always help.
Should I use first-name personalization?
Only when it improves the message. A first-name merge tag does not make an irrelevant email personally relevant.
Does a better subject line increase revenue?
It can, but optimize the entire conversion path. A higher open rate with weaker clicks or purchases is not automatically a better campaign.
Why are my email open rates falling?
Possible causes include content fatigue, weak relevance, poor segmentation, deliverability issues, list quality and sending frequency. The subject line may be only one factor.
