Black Friday SMS Marketing: Strategy, Timing & Examples

During Black Friday, the inbox gets crowded and customers are deciding quickly. SMS can cut through that, which is exactly why it is easy to overuse.

This page covers the seasonal side only: when to text during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, what to say and who to exclude. For the channel fundamentals, see our SMS marketing strategy guide.

Should You Use SMS for Black Friday?

Yes, when you have appropriate consent and the message is important enough to justify an immediate interruption.

Good moments for a Black Friday text:

  • the sale launch;
  • early access opening;
  • a major deadline;
  • the final hours of an event;
  • the Cyber Monday launch;
  • selected flash sales.

Do not text every time an email sends. SMS should be reserved for the moments where speed genuinely matters.

Email and SMS Have Different Jobs

Email
Explanation, product merchandising, visuals and education. Room to show the bundle, compare products and answer questions.
SMS
The offer, the deadline and the immediate next action. Nothing more.

The email side of the plan, including frequency, segments and resends, is covered in Black Friday email marketing.

This is an example structure, not a mandatory schedule. It assumes the event sequence described in our Black Friday marketing strategy. Fewer events means fewer texts.

Black Friday SMS Examples

The examples below use a fictional brand, NOVA. They are example structures, not real client messages.

MomentExample text
Early accessNOVA: Early access is open. Shop before the sale goes public later today: [link]
Black Friday launchNOVA: Black Friday is live. Save 25% through Sunday at midnight: [link]
Final hoursNOVA: Final few hours. Our Black Friday offer ends tonight: [link]
Cyber Monday launchNOVA: Cyber Monday is live. Spend $150 and save $40 through Wednesday: [link]

Notice the Cyber Monday message announces a different mechanism rather than the same offer with a new name. For more message structures outside peak season, see SMS marketing examples.

Exclude People Who Already Purchased

Do not keep buzzing someone's phone with reminders for an offer they already used. It is annoying, it drives opt-outs and it spends message budget on people who have already converted.

They can become eligible again for a genuinely different later event, such as a new Cyber Monday mechanism.

Keep Black Friday SMS Direct

The message is time-sensitive and the customer is busy. Communicate three things:

  1. the offer;
  2. the deadline;
  3. the next step.

Do not force heavy branding or long explanations into SMS. That is what the email is for.

Do Not Manufacture Urgency

If the sale ends Sunday, say so. If it will quietly continue another week, do not call Sunday the final chance.

False deadlines work once. After that, customers stop believing the next one, and that costs you during every future sale.

How to Measure Black Friday SMS

  • clicks;
  • orders;
  • revenue per recipient;
  • opt-outs;
  • message costs;
  • margin on the orders generated;
  • incremental return compared to email alone.

Do not judge success only by attributed revenue. SMS sent to people who were already going to buy from the email will look strong in attribution without adding much. See email marketing ROI for how we think about incrementality.
